Ute Artifacts
Our Archives include collections of artifacts of the early human inhabitants
of the Ute Pass area. Ute Pass Historical Society remains honored
to have been entrusted with these, due to the generosity of local families,
the Ute Pass communities, and supportive
collectors. Our Directors and Members
remain grateful for the support of all the communities of Ute Pass
and the greater Pikes Peak region, for
their participation in the effort to
maintain these collections, since our inception in 1976.
Currently, a UPHS display of Native
American pottery and clothing may be viewed at the Colorado Resource Room. Many of these items on display are from the
Ute Tribe. This display is located on
the third floor of the Woodland Park Library, a branch of the Rampart Library
District. The Woodland Park Library is
located at 218 East Midland
Avenue, in Woodland
Park, CO. Their public viewing hours are available by
calling (719)687-9281. Docent-guided
tours may be arranged by contacting the UPHS Office at (719)686-7512, or emailing
uphs@qwest.net.
Photographs
The Ute Pass
Historical Society has a wonderful collection of period photographs which
number in the thousands: reproductions may be purchased.
Included are photographs of people, buildings, and landscapes from
area families and photographers, found only in our Archives. We cannot find adequate words to express
our gratitude to each family which has chosen to share their photographs with
us. These generous gifts allow our
Volunteers to continue to compile our UPHS regional Photo Archive, and to
share these captured moments and edifying
views of the past with others.
We have provided period photographs for
authors doing historical research, as well as for local periodicals and
publications. Our Volunteers welcome the opportunity to assist you with
your project.
For current
information on pricing and reproduction policies for photo images in our
Archives, please contact our Photo Librarian at our UPHS Research Office by
calling (719)686-7512, or email uphs@qwest.net.

train stopped in front of the Ramona
Hotel. Named for a popular novel of the late
1800’s, that local landmark stood near the Cascade Depot of the Colorado Midland Railway, in the town of Cascade.

Midland Railway
At one time the Colorado
Midland Railroad connected Colorado Springs
(and the rest of our nation) with the mining towns of the central Rocky Mountains.
Our Archives Library hosts a collection of research books on the early
days of railroading, including the Colorado Midland Railway and the Colorado
Midland Terminal Railway. These are
available for review to our Members
and the public alike, by appointment or by chance. Appointments may be made by contacting our
Research Office at (719)686-7512, or email uphs@qwest.net.
Books and
Newspapers
Research books to aid in your search for general and specific information
about the Ute Pass
and Pikes Peak areas are available in our
Research Office. Our Archives Library
includes a limited number of newspapers published in the area since the
1890’s. Please be aware that a
selection of the older area newspapers
may be available on microfilm at area libraries, or through the Colorado
Historical Society.
Research
Requests
The Ute Pass Historical Society's Research Office is a resource for our
Members and the public alike. We
continue to recruit interested history buffs and researchers to assist fellow
Volunteers in compiling, organizing, and updating our Archives. We review new submissions of materials to
add to our Archives on an ongoing basis.
Because we lack a full compliment of research specialists for our Archives at
present, our current policy is to support “self-research”
projects only. We look forward to
an increase in the number of local folks interested in delving into our
Archives, willing to satisfy their own curiosity while offering research
assistance to others. Those who are
interested in assessing our current ability to assist with their Research
inquiries are encouraged to contact our Volunteers. Call (719) 686-7512, or email uphs@qwest.net
Fees
To offset expenses and fund our efforts to foster preservation of our local heritage, we
charge an hourly fee for research activities when local research specialists
are available. Contact our Research
Office for availability of this service, and current rates.
Additionally, current photocopy fees for research are:
·
$0.50 per sheet 8.5” X 11”, black & white,
or
·
$1.00 per sheet if larger,
black & white
·
$2.00 per sheet (color)
Be advised:
It is the policy of our Board of Directors
to request that all who visit our Research Office to search our Archives share
a copy of their final draft of organized research material with UPHS.
This policy exists for the purpose of organizing and adding on an ongoing
basis to the body of information in our Archives. Use and participation in the preservation
of local documents and area historic periodicals keeps our archival
preservation efforts current and effective.
We thank you in advance for your assistance in expanding the
information available on our local history and heritage.
NOTE:
All of the above not withstanding, our Volunteers are pleased to assist you
with your research project whenever possible.
In order to offer you the best possible arrangements, we recommend you
assume from the onset that UPHS research services at our Research Office are
always by appointment.
Please call (719) 686-7512, or use the
E-mail link below to contact our Research Office. Plan to give us as much information as you
can. We will reply and let you know
how we can assist you.
